Flipping the Class – Learning from Khan Academy

I started hearing people (or seeing people on the web) discuss “Flipping the class.” I didn’t know what it was, so I started researching.  The idea was presented in Salman Khan’s TED Talk.

I teach Humanities, but I know my colleagues teaching Math have used Khan Academy to support students. I finally really started to check it out. It is a lot of fun, and they have some great History lectures there too.

The big idea of Flipping the Classroom though is about switching homework and in-class lectures (basically). Khan suggests students could view a lecture for homework, and then get to play and interact with the learning in the classroom. What used to be homework, students can now do in the classroom.

I teach a Project-Based Curriculum. Flipping the classroom would benefit my classroom so well. If they take that lecture home, and view it at their own pace, replaying parts they need to, students could come in to class ready to work on their projects or group work. This would make school far more engaging, getting that boring lecture out of the way.

I’m currently trying to figure out how I will use it. I am thinking that I will be able to record many of my lectures ahead of time. Students can view just the parts they need for homework, then we can engage in our work in the class. If I add just a very simple assessment for them to take online after viewing the lecture, I should be able to get a view of who understands it and is ready (I use Edmodo, they could take quizzes via that).

When students come to class, I should be able to check the quizzes, see who still needs help, and see who really gets it. Students who need help could then either work with the teacher, or students who really understand it, to get them caught up.

This is a basic intro, and these are ideas I am just now thinking about how to integrate into the classroom. I’ll try to keep you updated as to how it goes.
